Rancho Penasquitos, California, has a population of over 60,000 people. There is a mix of ages, including families, retirees, and professionals. The area is around 6,500 acres.

It is located in the northeast of San Diego County, surrounded by other popular, affluent neighborhoods such as Carmel Valley, Poway, Scripps Ranch, San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, and Escondido. The landscape is one of rolling green hills, ridges, canyons, and mountains. 'Peñasquitos' means little cliffs or small crags in Spanish.

It is also around 17 miles from San Diego city. The interstate 15 express (I-5), State Route 56 (SR-56), and other prominent roads are easy to access.

All About Rancho Penasquitos History

Rancho Penasquitos was established in 1823, and ranching began. It was the time land was being gifted to different commandants. Captain Francisco Maria Diego was the San Diego Presidio commandant who received over 4000 acres of land in the area.

From 1823 onwards, Rancho Penasquitos continued to expand. It was a popular area close to the main road to San Diego, Yuma, and other early settlements. A lot of travelers and military were passing through during the Mexico-American war, too.

After the war, California joined the United States, and gold was discovered, so more settlers came. Rancho Penasquitos continued to thrive throughout the 1900s, with cattle ranches. However, cattle farming frequently burnt many areas with artificial fires, such as Los Peñasquitos Canyon and around the lagoon.

After the Second World War, there was a population boom in San Diego county, as the city became a bustling metropolis and demand for real estate grew. The introduction of the railway and new roads also preserved the area, which has continued to grow until this day.

The Peñasquitos, Inc. purchased the land in 1962. After changes to real estate development plans, real estate began to be built north of the canyon and became the start of the current Rancho Peñasquitos.

It is important to note that the San Diego County area was home to the Kumeyaay for thousands of years. Spanish rule and the Mexican-American war displaced many from their ancestral lands.
