It's hard not to notice when you've crossed into North Park. A large sign with those very words is displayed upon arrival, welcoming guests and visitors to this delightful community.

Nestled on the Northeast corner of Balboa Park, North Park San Diego is sandwiched in between the famous zoo and the Jacob Dekema Freeway. This locality attracts many different varieties of people.

As a result, North Park's plethora of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops have become the regular stomping grounds for young business professionals and hipsters alike.

North Park History (Early Days)

North Park is a creative hub for art, pubs, coffee houses, and craft beer today. But that hasn't always been the case.

In fact, one hundred years ago, there wasn't much of anything going on in this area. The entire region was blanketed in nothing but grass, dirt, and vast fields that stretched in all directions across the landscape.

The North Park parable has its origins back in the early 1900s. It was at this time when a sizable portion of the terrain was leveled and completely flattened out.

It was then split up into sections to be utilized for residential and commercial purposes.

Since then, North Park has grown and transformed in countless ways over the years.

The 1920s and 1930s saw urban existence thrive and flourish. This led the area to become a commercial highlight, with heaps of discount and specialty stores opening up after WWll.

Massive outdoor shopping malls were constructed in the 1970s, and as time progressed, North Park continued to keep up with the times without losing its roots.

And this is apparent with the modern feel of new buildings that are accompanied by the nostalgic representation of the old ones.

North Park Community and Schools

With a plethora of top-rated schools within the San Diego area, North Park is armed with resources to help your children grow, develop, and thrive. Old Town Charter School (K-8) has been deemed the second-best elementary charter school in the San Diego Bay area.

Furthermore, Preuss School UCSD (6-12) was named the best middle school in the San Diego Bay area.

And when you look at the Average Graduation Rate of 95% in addition to the 93% of parents and students who believe the teachers here genuinely care -- it's easy to see why.

All of this together, along with the warm and friendly demeanor of residents, makes North Park a community you'll be proud to call home.

Notable North Park Residents (Past and Present)

North Park would not be the trendy and modern neighborhood that it is without the many notable residents (past and present) who contributed to its growth.

Over one hundred years ago, in the 1910s, North Park was connected by the class one streetcar, a group of cars allocated for the Panama-California Expedition. That, along with the addition of the SD public transit system, was constructed by John D. Spreckels.

Spreckels is known for building a real estate and transportation empire in San Diego.

Furthermore, many of the homes' in North Park owe their unique styles to builder David Own Dryden. A designer and builder, Dryden is credited with bringing a new level of craftsmanship to the suburbs of North Park.

Having done the bulk of his work in the 1910s, North Park has a large centralized portion of the work he designed and constructed.

But the leaders of North Park aren't just confined to the past. On the contrary, there are many figureheads within this community that have helped shape its prominence.

For example, community leaders such as Sean Spear (and his team) at Community Housing Works have provided thousands of people with strong homes in healthy communities. They accomplish this aim through services, programs, and other resources.

The community of North Park would not be able to grow and thrive without the amazing residents (past and present) who have helped make that growth possible.
