Clairemont, also known as Clairemont Mesa, is a community in the city of San Diego. It occupies an area of approximately 13 square miles and is home to just under 90,000 residents. 

The community of Clairemont can be subdivided into the neighborhoods of Bay Ho, Bay Park, Clairemont Mesa East, Clairemont Mesa West, and North Clairemont.

The nearby communities of Birdland, Kearny Mesa, Linda Vista, University City, and Serra Mesa are also considered when searching for Clairemont real estate.  

Clairemont San Diego History 

Prior to colonization, Clairemont was home to the Kumeyaay people. They practiced a sophisticated form of environmental management. 

The Kumeyaay people used fire to open up land that was covered by chaparral to allow transitional plants used for food and medicine to grow. This also attracted game animals that were used for food, clothing, and utilities. They also dammed drainages in drier areas to raise the water table and create wetlands. 

Spanish colonizers arrived in 1542. They founded the nearby Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá in 1769. 

One of the first settlers of Clairemont was Judge Hyde. He began farming in the Tecolote Canyon in 1872. The land was primarily used for farming and ranching until after World War II. After the war, Clairemont was divided up into subdivisions and construction began on the family homes that dominate the area today.

Clairemont is bordered by Interstate 5 to the west and Interstate 805 to the east. Further east past Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa is Interstate 15.

All of these roads are popular commuter routes and tend to experience heavier traffic during rush hours. Southbound traffic headed for the city is heaviest between 7 and 9 a.m. Northbound traffic is heaviest between 4 and 8 p.m.

The weather in Clairemont is generally warm and arid, much like the rest of San Diego. Winter temperatures range from the upper 60s to the upper 40s. Snow and ice are extremely rare. 

Temperatures in the summer months range between the 70s and 80s during the day. At night, it drops down to the mid-60s.

Because Clairemont is located in a desert, nighttime temperatures can be colder than expected. Breezes coming in off the sea keep temperatures from getting too hot. 

Clairemont also experiences very little rain. The region only has two to five days of rain per month. That number can even fall to zero during June, July, August, and September.
