The school assignments in Carmel Valley can be confusing because their is an overlay of school districts. The northern portion of Carmel Valley is part of the Solana Beach School District (K-6). Del Mar Union School District (K-6) is part of the southern portion. The San Dieguito Union High School District overlays all of Carmel Valley for the middle schools and high schools. The bordering portion of Carmel Valley assigns some residents to schools in the communities of Pacific Highlands Ranch, Torrey Hills, and Torrey Pines. Top rated public high school, Torrey Pines High School and Canyon Crest Academy are part of the San Dieguito union high school district.  Attendance at Canyon Crest Academy can be determined by a lottery because it a public "school of choice."

The most secure and prestigious gated community in Carmel Valley is guard gated Rancho Pacifica. Meadows Del Mar surrounding the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Resort Resort is also guard gated, however security is not as tight because the resort is open to the public. Duck Pond Ranch and The Preserve are both $3M+ keypad gated enclaves.

Palacio Del Mar

Palacio Del Mar is a gated community of four hundred twenty homes built by RB McComic and Pardee between 1995-1997 located just south of the 56 off the Carmel Country exit. Senterra Rancho Santa Fe Villages of Fairbanks

Senterra is one of the three “Villages of Fairbanks” developed by Ray Watt located directly between Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and the Del Mar Country Club located in the Rancho Santa Fe community. Senterra is a gated community of sixty two executive Mediterranean Spanish homes divided into three sections with a community pool and spa for each. Senterra Elite was designed to be more high end and is the lower section. Senterra residents attend Solana Santa Fe Elementary School, Earl Warren Middle School, and Torrey Pines High School. Torrey Woods Estates
